Eligibility – Read Carefully
You must be 12th grade and above and accepted at
an accredited Junior or academic college or university.
This school
must be located within the
original Minnesota territorial boundaries as described by the U.S. Congress.

The applicant does not need to live within the territorial boundaries.
Essay Topic: The essay question is "How did the Dakota Uprising of 1862 affect your ancestor, what were the results of that uprising and how do the results of that incident affect us today?” 2012 is the 150th Anniversary of the 1862 Dakota Uprising, a time of stress for the Dakota and the settlers, whether they were directly involved or on the periphery ... Be sure to tell both sides of the story.
Essay Length & format: A
minimum of 750 words but no more than 1500, not including the bibliography.
The essay must be submitted using Microsoft Word in Arial, Tahoma or
Calibri font, size 12 and double-spaced with 1” margins in the MLA format.
Answers.com and Wikipedia are not acceptable Bibliography resources.
Membership in the MTP organization is not required.
MTP Board of Directors and their
immediate families are not eligible.
Deadlines and Information
A paper copy of the
essay must be submitted along
with this application, postmarked by March 1,
2012 and sent electronically to

by
midnight CST March 1, 2012.
The scholarship recipient will be announced after April 21, 2012.
Essays will be judged for historical accuracy, interest and content. Judges are
members of the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Territorial Pioneers, Inc.
The winning essay will be published by the Minnesota Territorial
Pioneers, Inc. in their newsletter and announced at our Annual Membership
Meeting on May 12, 2012.
The $500 scholarship will be paid directly to the college upon proof of the
student’s first-term attendance and passing grades.
Funds will be applied towards the
student’s second-term tuition and/or fees.
