scholarship opportunity!Each year the Minnesota Territorial Pioneers awards a scholarship for use at an accredited college within the boundaries of the original Minnesota Territory.

To be eligible, an applicant must

  • be in 12th grade or above;

  • show proof of acceptance by an accredited junior or academic college or university located within the original boundaries of the Minnesota Territory, as designated by the U.S. Congress;

  • Membership in MTP is not required;

  • Upon receiving proof of the recipient's successful completion of the first term, the $500 scholarship will be paid directly to the college for application to the second term's expenses.

                                             Immediate family members of MTP Board Members are not eligible.

The 2011-2012 Scholarship Essay Topic: 
How did the Dakota Uprising of 1862 affect your ancestor, what were the results of that uprising and how do the results of that incident affect us today?
2012 is the 150th Anniversary of the 1862 Dakota Uprising, a time of stress for the Dakota and the settlers, whether they were directly involved or on the periphery ... Be sure to tell both sides of the story.
 
The territory included all of the State of Minnesota and extended west to the Missouri River (including the eastern portions of the states of North and South Dakota). You'll find a territorial map, more about the boundaries and history of the territory in the "Territory History" section of our website.

Essay Length and Format
The essay must be from 750-1500 words in length, not including the bibliography. 
The essay should be submitted in MLA format, readable in Microsoft Word
Font face: Arial, Tahoma, or Calibri
Font size: 12 pt
Style:  Double spaced with 1" margins

Deadline
Submissions must be postmarked and submitted electronically by midnight CST March 1, 2012.

Judging
Essays will be judged for historical accuracy, presentation and content. Judges are members of the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Territorial Pioneers, Inc.
Wikipedia and Ask.com are not acceptable bibliographic sources.
 

The scholarship recipient will be notified after April 21, 2012. The winning essay will be published by the Minnesota Territorial Pioneers, Inc. in their newsletter and announced at the Annual Membership Meeting on May 12, 2012.
